It was named by the Advisory Committee on Antarctic Names (US-ACAN) in 1993 after J. Robie Vestal (1942–92), a microbiologist at the University of Cincinnati, 1983–92, and the chairman of the advisory committee to the Division of Polar Programs, National Science Foundation, 1990-91.
